A short and rewarding Hike

Looking for a nice easy hike on this sunny Monday, we selected Owl Head Lookout (not to be confused with Owls Head in Keene). This hike offers great views after an ascent that is steep only for the last few yards. The trailhead is located east of Keene, on Route 9N toward Elizabethtown. If you were to follow the trail to its end, you’d wind up after seven miles on Giant Mountain, one of the 46ers.

We started our hike around 9:30am. From the parking area we followed a dirt driveway for a short distance before dropping into the woods. This is a very beautiful hike that for much of the way follows and crosses Slide Brook several times. The brook was running good with some lovely waterfalls and pools. The trail goes through Hemlocks and hard woods for the most part.

The climb is easy for the first mile after which it is steady but never steep to a junction at 2.4 miles. The final 0.1 mile is very steep, however you are rewarded with fantastic views because the summit has wide open views in almost all directions. You have wonderful views of the valley below Giant and Rocky Peak Ridge, as well as over to Hurricane. Great views of the slides on the east side of Giant, too.
